BIG HORN SHEEP & ELK HUNTS
This Outfitter offers a family run business which does summer trail rides and Trophy Sheep and Elk hunts in the fall. They are full time Outfitters, and definitely a hands on operation.
A total of 8 sheep hunters and 4 rifle elk hunters per year are taken by this outfitter and they have the option of taking an additional 4 archery only Elk hunters. They have been taking elk and sheep hunts in the same area for the past 20 plus years and over the past seven years have only 6 clients that have not killed a sheep. Legal sheep in this region must be 4/5 of a full curl. Elk hunters have maintained approximately 75% success in harvesting 6 point or better (legal requirement is 6 point in this area) bulls.
All of our Alberta Sheep and Elk hunts involve a certain amount of Horseback and packhorse as they are operated in a Wilderness park in which no motorized vehicles or planes are permitted. The area is rugged to say the least and although we attempt to make our hunts as easy as possible they may require a good deal of perseverance and stamina. Although there is adequate numbers of sheep in the area a reasonable exception is a ram in 165-169 range. Most sheep harvested here have bases in the 15" plus range, carry their weight quite well and have a curl of between 32-37 inch. The average score is in the mid 160's.
As mentioned Elk in the region must be a minimum 6 point on one side to be legal. Most legal bull will exceed 300 Boone and Crocket.
All rifle hunts (Elk & Sheep) are one hunter per guide and all begin in September.
Sheep season ends on October 15.
Our policy to date for hunters who have completed their hunt without harvesting an animal is to invite them back for the last 10 days of the season NO CHARGE.
Our Rifle Elk hunt begins on approximately September 17 and runs 12 days. This is usually during the peak of the Rut.
Our usual method is call and stalk.
The area we hunt is north of Jasper National Park, east of the British Columbia border. Our nearest Airport is Edmonton International and we are approximately 5 hours (by vehicle) from there.
